Mexican cops save rape suspects

MEXICO CITY - Two men accused of rape were rescued from angry crowds over the weekend, as Mexican authorities remain on alert for vigilante justice after the lynching of two federal agents Nov 23.

Mexico's Attorney General's Office is investigating the killing of two plainclothes agents who were beaten and burned alive by an angry crowd that apparently mistook the officers for child abductors.

The inquiry also is examining the response of city and federal police, who failed to arrive for hours even as TV cameras broadcast the killing of the officers.

On Sunday, federal officers and 22 riot police rescued two men who were being beaten by 10 to 15 people in southern Mexico City, federal police representative Irene Morales said. The men, ages 20 and 23, had been reported to police for allegedly raping a woman earlier in the day. Relatives and friends of the victim found the suspects first in the Xochimilco district.

Rescued by police, the beaten men were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and remained under arrest in the rape.
